A forum on media and artificial intelligence was held in Moscow, the capital of Russia, to mark the 65th anniversary of OANA’s founding. The program, hosted by TASS, addressed the use of artificial intelligence in the media, the preservation of professional standards and efforts to combat disinformation.
TASS Director General Andrey Kondrashov, OANA Secretary General and TASS Deputy Director General Marat Abulhatin, and representatives of OANA member organizations attended the panels held at a hotel as part of the forum. Anadolu Agency Deputy Director General and Editor-in-Chief Yusuf Özhan and AA Director of Strategic Communications and Brand Management Hazal Duran also took part in the program.
Editorial responsibility emphasized in the use of artificial intelligence
A panel titled “Media and Artificial Intelligence: Methodology and Ethics in the Digital Age” was held under the moderation of Yaroslav Kurilo, adviser to the head of TASS’s International Relations Department. Yusuf Özhan said artificial intelligence plays a role in discovering, producing and distributing news, as well as shaping the public agenda.
Özhan said the issue for media organizations was not whether to engage with artificial intelligence, but how to use the technology responsibly. He said artificial intelligence provides benefits in news writing and monitoring, translation, transcription, image generation and editorial workflows.
Özhan said artificial intelligence can process large amounts of information and automate repetitive tasks, adding that the technology can identify potential news stories in a short time. He emphasized that understanding the context of an event, assessing its public significance and making editorial decisions remain the responsibility of humans.
Copyright, data privacy and transparency
Özhan said the sources of the data used by artificial intelligence systems, the use of copyrighted materials and the protection of the rights of people who produce original works must be assessed.
Özhan also addressed the importance of data privacy, saying it was necessary to clearly consider how sensitive data would be protected when personal information is collected or processed. He said audiences should have sufficient information about whether artificial intelligence was used in the content presented to them.
AA’s artificial intelligence applications
Özhan said Anadolu Agency uses artificial intelligence in its daily operations and content production processes. He explained that the agency’s news-monitoring module scans large amounts of social media content to identify events that may have news value and presents potential stories to editors and reporters for assessment.
Özhan said AA Technology was established to strengthen the agency’s technological capacity and develop innovative solutions for the media sector. He said they aimed to integrate artificial intelligence more effectively into workflows, increase operational efficiency and support the digital transformation of journalism.
Özhan emphasized that artificial intelligence could help identify important developments more quickly, but could not make the final editorial decision. He said accuracy, reliability, editorial responsibility, robust verification mechanisms, transparent practices and human judgment must be preserved.
International agencies stress human oversight
Enkh-Orshikh Khurlee, director general of Mongolia’s news agency MONTSAME, said artificial intelligence can make mistakes and that the final decision should belong to humans. Khurlee said journalists needed to acquire new skills, use artificial intelligence and know how to verify information.
Nguyen Duc Vu, director of the Technical Center of the Vietnam News Agency, said artificial intelligence should be used carefully during work and that restricting access to certain information was important. Amanpreet Singh, editor-in-chief of India’s news agency Press Trust of India, warned that artificial intelligence could escape human control.
Moriyasu Chikazawa, director of the International Relations Department of Japan’s Kyodo News, said artificial intelligence helped with their work, but that the decision was still made by humans.
Cooperation talks among news agencies
Yusuf Özhan held separate meetings with officials from the Vietnam News Agency and the Saudi Press Agency on the sidelines of the forum. The meetings, which were also attended by Hazal Duran, addressed cooperation between Anadolu Agency and the respective agencies.
