A total of 557 irregular migrants reached El Hierro, part of Spain’s Canary Islands, in three boats over the past 24 hours.
Canary Islands coast guard units said the boats were intercepted at sea and the 557 people aboard were brought ashore on El Hierro. The boats had departed from the coast of Guinea-Bissau in West Africa.
The migrants are citizens of six countries
The groups trying to reach Spain comprised 268, 99 and 190 people. The migrants were citizens of Senegal, Gambia, Mali, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau and Côte d’Ivoire.
Women and children were among those brought ashore on the island. People whose health raised concerns were taken to hospitals.
According to Spanish Interior Ministry data, the number of irregular migrants arriving in the Canary Islands from North Africa exceeded 1,700 in September.
