On the night of June 4 in Avcılar, Sedef Güler, who left home for a job interview, died the same night. The court panel sentenced Yavuz Güngör to aggravated life imprisonment for 'intentional killing of a woman.' Güngör's friend Fırat Baykara received 18 years in prison for 'aiding the murder.'
It was stated that during the incident, Güler argued with Güngör's daughter at the cafe where she went for the job interview, and then went to Güngör's house in Beylikdüzü. Güngör, who had a finalized prison sentence for drug trafficking, asked Baykara for help after consuming alcohol following Güler's death.
The body was wrapped in a carpet, weighted, and thrown into the sea in Büyükçekmece. Güler's body was found by fishermen on June 7 and identified by her family through the snake tattoo on her back. The police identified the perpetrators thanks to the dry cleaner's tag on the carpet wrapping the body.
The presiding judge dissented, stating that a high amount of drugs was found in Güler's blood and the exact cause of death could not be determined. According to this view, Güngör committed 'killing by conscious negligence,' and Baykara committed 'concealing or destroying evidence.'
The decision was made by majority vote, and the court process and sentences are being closely followed by the public. Official statements and possible appeals will become clear in the coming days.
