The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has introduced new rules for slaughterhouses to increase transparency in meat production and ensure animal welfare. The amendments to the Regulation on Special Hygiene Rules for Animal Food were published in the Official Gazette.
Under the regulation, which will take effect on January 1, 2027, it will be mandatory to monitor live animals, carcasses, by-products, and personnel movements with cameras in slaughterhouses.
Camera Footage to Be Stored for 30 Days
According to the new rules, all areas including animal holding areas, slaughter areas, live animal shackling, evisceration, cooling, cutting, and packaging sections will be covered by cameras. The cameras will be wide-angle and high-resolution; recordings will be kept for at least 30 days.
Additionally, Provincial and District Directorates of Agriculture and Forestry will be able to access these camera systems. The numbers of slaughtered animals and poultry will be digitally tracked.
Strict Rules for Animal Welfare During Slaughter
The regulation amendment prohibits hanging or lifting animals by their feet while they are conscious. Mechanical clamping of the feet alone will not be permitted as a restraint method.
Slaughterhouses will be required to use modern equipment that does not apply excessive pressure on the animal, has non-slip surfaces, operates quietly, has no sharp edges, and does not make sudden movements.
