Ahsen Tuana Kurt, who was diagnosed with autism at a young age, took up athletics three years ago at her mother’s encouragement to help her socialize. Training with special athletes coach Nuri Can Kastal, Kurt achieved strong results in a short time.
Türkiye records in two events
Kurt won the long jump at the Türkiye Special Athletes Athletics Championship held in Konya in 2024. She then won the 200- and 400-meter events at the Special Athletes School Sports competition held in Samsun in 2025.
At this year’s Türkiye Special Athletes Athletics Championship in Konya, Kurt set Türkiye records in the 400- and 800-meter events and took first place in both categories.
Her goal is to compete for the national team
Ahsen Tuana Kurt, a ninth-grade student at Yalnızdut Special Education Practice School, said she greatly enjoyed athletics and felt better when taking part in sports. Kurt said she had returned from the tournaments she entered with strong results and had won five Türkiye championships to date.
Kurt said her goal was to compete for Türkiye and join the national team.
Her mother and coach support her
Ahsen’s mother, Tuğba Kurt, said sports had increased her daughter’s self-confidence. Tuğba Kurt said she initially encouraged her daughter to take up sports so she could socialize and added that she was proud of her championship victories.
Tuğba Kurt said her daughter had become more social through sports and that their goal was to represent Türkiye in Europe.
Coach Nuri Can Kastal said Ahsen’s determination, motivation and hard work had contributed to her success. Kastal said they trained every day and that his athlete had achieved success in a short time, setting Türkiye records in the 400- and 800-meter events.
Kastal said they expected Ahsen to be called up to the national team and aimed for her to represent Türkiye abroad.
