Azerbaijan said it welcomed the candidacy of United Arab Emirates (UAE) Minister of State Lana Zaki Nusseibeh for UN secretary-general, nominated by the UAE.
Responding to a question about the candidacy, Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ayhan Hajizada said Baku welcomed the UAE’s initiative to nominate Nusseibeh.
Hajizada stressed that they attach particular importance to the next UN secretary-general being selected in line with the principles of the UN Charter. The spokesperson said they hoped the process would conclude with an outcome that contributes to creating a stronger and more effective UN capable of responding to today’s challenges.

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries unanimously supported the candidacy announced by the UAE last week. Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Jordan and Palestine also announced their support for Nusseibeh.
Nusseibeh served as the UAE’s permanent representative to the UN from 2013 to 2024. She also served as vice president of the UN General Assembly and president of the Executive Board of UN Women. If elected, she would become the first woman to lead the UN.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ second term will end on December 31. Türkiye is reportedly preparing to nominate former Foreign Minister Feridun Sinirlioğlu for the race.
