The Gen Pharma Caucasus Manufacturing Operations MMC pharmaceutical production facility, established through cooperation between Turkish company GEN İlaç ve Sağlık Ürünleri AŞ and Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Economy, has opened. President Aliyev inaugurated the facility in the Pirallahi Industrial Park.
The factory, built on an area of 5.2 hectares, is planned to have an annual production capacity of 60 million boxes of medicines. This capacity is expected to correspond to approximately 2.5 billion tablets and capsules.
Production for a range of treatment areas
In addition to painkillers and antibiotics, the facility will produce medicines used in cardiology, neurology, urology, diabetology and gastroenterology. The factory is planned to provide permanent employment for 178 people.
The production line will use equipment manufactured by leading companies in the United States, Japan, Germany, Switzerland, China, Denmark, Sweden and Türkiye. The medicines produced at the factory are planned for export not only to Azerbaijan’s domestic market but also to Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Georgia and other countries.
Training and scientific cooperation infrastructure
Infrastructure for training and scientific cooperation has also been established at the facility. As part of this initiative, an official training base was set up for Karabakh University and Azerbaijan Medical University.
The factory is intended to contribute to training and scientific studies aimed at developing Azerbaijan’s pharmaceutical industry.
Initial target is to produce 50 medicines in 2027
Abidin Gülmüş, chairman of the board of GEN İlaç ve Sağlık Ürünleri AŞ, said it was a source of pride for them that President Aliyev inaugurated the facility. Gülmüş said they aim to develop Azerbaijan’s pharmaceutical sector, which is still at an early stage.
Gülmüş said the factory was established to enable the local production of vital medicines, adding that 66 percent of the shares belong to GEN İlaç and 29 percent to the Azerbaijan Ministry of Economy’s Business Development Fund.
Gülmüş said construction was completed in less than two years, adding that they would prioritize producing vital medicines needed by Azerbaijan’s healthcare system and that their initial target was to produce 50 medicines in 2027.
Gülmüş said the factory was important for the development of Azerbaijan’s pharmaceutical industry and for Azerbaijan–Türkiye economic cooperation. He said it was the only factory capable of producing medicines from raw materials through to finished products, adding that they aim to reach more than 500 medicines within five years by completing new drug formulations.
