China and the United States reached an eight-point consensus during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to the US. The consensus, announced by Xinhua, calls for a constructive strategic stability relationship between the two countries based on “respect, fairness and reciprocity.”
The two sides agreed that Iran must honor its commitment not to develop nuclear weapons and that no country or institution may charge tolls on international waterways.
On the economy, they welcomed the development of mechanisms such as a Trade Council, a $30 billion reciprocal tariff-reduction arrangement and the extension of outcomes from consultations in Kuala Lumpur.
Under the consensus, the countries will set up a China-US dialogue on artificial intelligence and a communication channel for AI incidents, with the next round planned for November.
The two sides also pledged to support the APEC summit to be hosted by China and the G20 summit to be hosted by the United States, which Xi and Trump plan to attend. The consensus recalled that the two countries were allies in World War II, agreed to continue joint counternarcotics operations and welcomed the arrival of giant pandas leased by China to Zoo Atlanta.
