Ian A. Brinksman, 42, who worked as a CIA contractor in the United States, was detained by the FBI. Brinksman is accused of unlawfully transmitting national defense information under the Espionage Act and faces up to 10 years in prison.
According to the FBI's sworn affidavit, Brinksman accessed five classified intelligence reports outside his area of responsibility between March and October and passed information from those reports to his journalist girlfriend, identified in the document only as "Person No. 1." The journalist, who publishes an independent newsletter, has not been charged.

According to Israel's Ynet website, the leaked information included Israel's efforts to persuade Washington to kill a senior Iranian official, military cooperation between the United States and Israel, and the CIA's assessment of the risk of internal conflict in Israel. These details do not appear in the indictment but were included in information reported by the media.
CIA Director John Ratcliffe said that the unauthorized sharing of classified information poses serious risks to national security, intelligence sources, ongoing operations and personnel.
