The detention of nine suspects in the investigation into the passenger ferry that sank off Kyrenia has been extended by a further seven days. The suspects appeared before Kyrenia District Court for the fourth time as part of the investigation.
The court also ordered two suspects with health problems to undergo medical examinations at a fully equipped hospital.
More than 300 statements taken in investigation
Assistant Police Inspector Mehmet Mannaş said in court that more than 300 people had given statements in connection with the accident to date. Letters were sent to many institutions in Türkiye and Northern Cyprus as part of the investigation, while five people wanted under arrest warrants are being sought.
Mannaş also said that the assistant captain had given a voluntary statement. Photographs found in WhatsApp messages obtained from the suspects showed that a crack at the tip of the front-left sponson of the vessel had been superficially repaired.
It was determined that the repair shown in photographs dated June 17 had been carried out by a crew member working aboard the vessel on the captain’s orders. The photographs showing the repair were sent to the captain and to a company official who is wanted under an arrest warrant.

A total of 267 passengers and crew members were aboard. Following the accident, 239 people were rescued, while 14 passengers died in the wreck, located at a depth of 554 meters off Kyrenia. Efforts to locate the 14 missing people are continuing.
