Oslo and Berlin will be connected by rail with a new direct train line starting in 2028. Passengers will be able to travel between the two capitals without changing trains.
Norway's national railway company Vy, Denmark's DSB and Germany's Deutsche Bahn will jointly launch the line. The planned services will bring Northern Europe closer to Central Europe with a single connection without transfers.
Deutsche Bahn's ICE L trains will operate between Oslo and Berlin via Hamburg, Copenhagen, Malmö and Gothenburg. This route will combine both intra-Scandinavian and continental European connections on the same line.
The route will include many important stops
The line's stops will include Moss, Fredrikstad, Sarpsborg, Halden, Trollhättan, Gothenburg, Halmstad, Helsingborg, Lund, Malmö, Copenhagen Airport and Copenhagen Central Station. After Copenhagen, the train will reach Berlin via Odense, Kolding, Padborg and Hamburg.
The trains will also feature a restaurant car and a family section. Thus, the line will offer both comfort and a more suitable option for different passenger groups on long-distance journeys.
According to Vy, the Oslo-Copenhagen journey will take about 7 hours. The total travel time on the Oslo-Berlin line is expected to be around 15 hours.
Services will begin in the summer months
Round-trip services are planned to operate twice daily from summer 2028. It was reported that departure times and ticket prices will be announced closer to the first service date.
The company noted that it has been more than 20 years since Norwegians could travel directly to Copenhagen by train. Vy CEO Gro Bakstad also described the establishment of a regular train line between Oslo, Copenhagen, Hamburg and Berlin as a positive development.
Bakstad said that thanks to the cooperation, Norway will be more closely connected to Europe and that this could pave the way for direct train services to other European cities in the future.
