French President Emmanuel Macron held a press conference following the EU Leaders' Summit held in Brussels, the capital of Belgium.
Macron stated that a more effective policy is needed to ensure the return of individuals who enter European Union countries illegally to their home countries. However, he declared his opposition to the idea of establishing 'return centers' in third countries for these individuals.
The French leader argued that he has not seen any return center established in a third country work effectively to date, asserting that such a policy is ineffective and contrary to European principles.
Support for Ukraine and Sanctions on Russia
Macron noted that for the first time since the new administration came to power in the US, there is consensus between Americans and Europeans on support for Ukraine.
Emphasizing that European support for Ukraine also involves increasing sanctions on Russia, Macron said, "We will strengthen our sanctions on the Russian oil and natural gas sector for the rapid adoption of the 21st sanctions package."
The French President stated that Europeans are ready to contribute to security guarantees for Ukraine through the Coalition of Volunteers. He invited member countries to the Coalition of Volunteers Summit to be held in Paris on July 13.
Developments in the Middle East
Macron expressed that they welcome the agreement reached between the US and Iran. He assessed that this agreement has led to the end of conflicts in the region, including Lebanon, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and the resumption of negotiations.
"Europeans are ready to contribute to the implementation of this agreement," said Macron, adding that they support Israel's withdrawal from Lebanese territory.
The French leader, stating that the EU will mobilize its resources to strengthen the Lebanese state and security forces, noted that the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip is unacceptable.
