President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan spoke at a joint press conference with Niger President Abdurrahman Tchiani. Highlights from President Erdoğan's statements:
I am pleased to host President Tchiani and his delegation, who made their first official visit outside Africa to our country, here in Ankara. I welcome them once again in your presence. I hope today's meetings and the contacts the guest delegation will have with our business circles will be auspicious. Niger is one of the leading friendly and brotherly countries in Africa with which we have deep historical relations. Our relations with this strategically important geography, dating back to the 1400s, are developing day by day with the contributions of Mr. Tchiani today.
Despite all the challenges faced by Niger under the leadership of my dear brother, we see that it is making a different breakthrough. As a friend in difficult times for African peoples, we support Niger's development struggle with all the means at our disposal. In today's meetings, we confirmed our determination to advance our relations, built on our shared history and mutual respect, in every field. We thoroughly evaluated our relations with President and his valuable delegation in defense, especially defense industry, security, energy, mining, trade, investments, education, health, and agriculture. We discussed investment opportunities in Niger. We agreed on the establishment of the Economic and Commercial Joint Committee. As we witnessed a moment ago, we further strengthened the contractual basis of our relations by signing agreements in various fields. The Turkey-Niger Friendship Hospital, whose operating protocol we renewed, makes very valuable contributions to the humanitarian dimension of our relations with Niger. TİKA, which implements the Friendship Hospital and friendship school projects, continues its contributions to strengthening Niger's administrative and civil infrastructure, especially in irrigation, agriculture, and livestock. We are pleased with the course of our cooperation in the education field, which we value greatly.
Our Turkey Maarif Foundation provides education to over 1700 students with 12 schools in the capital Niamey. Nearly 500 Nigerien students receive higher education in our country, including 300 with Turkey Scholarships. Turkey graduates act as ambassadors of goodwill, contributing to the strengthening of affection between us. A memorandum of understanding was just signed between our Higher Education Institution and its Nigerien counterpart for cooperation. God willing, we will continue our cooperation with Niger in all these areas.
Dear members of the press, as I emphasize at every opportunity, we continue to develop our relations with African countries based on equal partnership, mutual respect, and win-win principles. We see these relations not only in commercial and economic fields but also as long-term cooperation in a wide range of areas such as security, education, culture, and transportation. We stand by our friendly and brotherly countries in the continent, especially in the Sahel region, in the fight against terrorist organizations causing instability. We follow with appreciation the fight of Niger's security forces against terrorism under the leadership of Mr. Tchiani. We also evaluated closer cooperation opportunities in military training and intelligence with them within this framework. We stated that we are ready to share our country's experience in this field.
I also believe that we will soon see positive results from the meetings the guest delegation will hold with our leading defense industry companies. With these thoughts, as I conclude my words, I thank my dear brother Tchiani again for his visit to our country and send my warmest regards to the friendly and brotherly people of Niger. Now, I leave the floor to the President.
