European Union (EU) member states have approved the United Kingdom's participation in the €90 billion loan programme established to meet Ukraine's urgent defence needs in 2026 and 2027.
According to a statement from the EU Council, member states gave the "green light" for the UK to join the credit support mechanism for Ukraine.
The statement noted that with the loan financing, Ukraine will be able to purchase defence products not only from companies in the EU, the European Economic Area (EEA), the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) and other approved third countries, but also from British defence industry companies.
EU Council President and Ireland's Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Helen McEntee said in her assessment of the decision, "Today's decision reflects the shared determination of the EU and the UK to support Ukraine for as long as it takes to end Russia's illegal war of aggression and achieve a comprehensive, just and lasting peace."
The EU Council document noted that member states approved London's participation in the loan programme because the UK met the three conditions set for third countries to join the mechanism.
