Fatih Terim assessed the UEFA Nations League A match between Türkiye and Italy. Saying that both teams need a victory, Terim described the match as an important opportunity for Türkiye, which wants to make a fresh start after the World Cup.

Recalling that Türkiye will take the field without Hakan Çalhanoğlu and Kenan Yıldız, Terim said the absence of the two players would be felt. However, he said Arda Güler is an extraordinary talent and Can Uzun is a promising player, adding that such matches offer young footballers an opportunity to take responsibility.
Terim stresses character and patience
Terim said Türkiye must play bravely and intelligently against Italy, noting that the opponent has the experience to capitalize on even the slightest mistake. According to Terim, the decisive factor in the match will be the character Türkiye shows on the field.
Asked what kind of performance Türkiye would produce after being eliminated in the group stage of the 2026 World Cup, Terim said the country has a strong football culture and a pool of talent capable of producing top-level players. Saying that consistency, discipline and the right mindset are needed to achieve results, Terim noted that major tournaments reveal strengths and weaknesses, adding that the important thing is to learn from these experiences.
Terim also assessed Türkiye's 1-0 defeat against France. Saying that the national team remained in the game despite facing a strong opponent, Terim said that in some matches, it is necessary to look beyond the result at the performance, fighting spirit and ability to create chances. Terim noted that Türkiye needs patience and determination to establish a football identity.
A message of consistency for Montella
Terim said he has known national team head coach Vincenzo Montella from both his playing and coaching careers, describing Montella as a coach who reads the game well and has his own ideas.
Terim said the decision to continue with Montella after the World Cup showed the federation's confidence in him and the results of his work. Saying that it takes time for a team to establish a particular style of play, Terim expressed his support for consistency. Recalling that Türkiye was in UEFA Nations League C several years ago, Terim praised the progress made by Montella and the team.
Italy needs to rebuild
Terim described Italy's failure to qualify for three consecutive World Cups as a major disappointment and said the situation must be addressed seriously. Recalling that Italy won the European Championship in 2021, Atalanta won the UEFA Europa League in 2024 and Roma won the UEFA Conference League in 2022, Terim said Italian football still has great potential.
Terim said Italy's youth teams, the opportunities offered to young players and the transfer policies of its clubs need to be reviewed. Describing Italian football as a school of tactics, Terim noted that football is constantly evolving and that relying solely on tactics, defensive organization or past successes is not enough.
Terim said Italy needs time and a comprehensive plan for rebuilding, adding that the goal should not only be to qualify for the World Cup but also to help Italian football regain its identity and competitiveness.
Terim described Roberto Mancini, who previously led Italy to the European Championship title, as an important coach. Saying that he found Italy's football under Mancini, the players' confidence and the unbeaten run they achieved remarkable, Terim said Mancini's return would not solve all the problems but that he has the experience needed to succeed.
Terim also said that the players he admires most in the Italy national team are Gianluigi Donnarumma, Riccardo Calafiori, Nicolo Barella, Sandro Tonali, Federico Di Marco and the young player Pio Esposito.
