A Romanian F-16 fighter jet shot down a drone that illegally entered the country's airspace on Friday. Officials said it was the first time a NATO ally had intercepted and destroyed a drone within its own national airspace.
Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Țoiu said the interception took place over an uninhabited area in Buzău County. In a post on X, Țoiu stated, "Today at 11:02 a.m., a Romanian pilot in an F-16 fighter jet shot down a drone that entered our airspace without authorization. This is the first time a drone has been intercepted and destroyed in Romania's national airspace."
Romanian officials have not yet determined the drone's origin or purpose. Romania's Chief of the General Staff said the pilots described the drone as a Shahed-type, an Iranian design widely used by Russia against Ukraine.
Growing danger on NATO's eastern flank
The incident has reignited concerns that Russia's war in Ukraine could spill over into NATO territory. Romania, which borders Ukraine, has reported dozens of drone violations or debris incidents since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion in 2022.
Romanian President Nicușor Dan and Defense Minister Radu Miruță reiterated their commitment to protecting the country's airspace and investing in modern air defense and anti-drone capabilities.
Deadly attacks continue in Ukraine
On the day the drone was shot down, Ukraine reported deadly Russian attacks in the Kyiv region and Slovyansk. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that six people were killed and dozens wounded in a Russian missile strike in the Kyiv region. Later reports indicated the death toll had risen to 10 and the number of wounded to nearly 100.
In Slovyansk, a strike with guided aerial bombs killed five people and wounded nine. The attack also damaged the building of Latvia's honorary consulate. Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braže announced that two consulate employees were wounded, while honorary consul Oleksandr Pavenko was unharmed. Latvia summoned Russia's chargé d'affaires to the Foreign Ministry and issued a protest note.
Zelenskyy described the attacks as "barbaric attacks on civilians" and reiterated his call for air defense support from partners. "Interceptors for Patriot systems are the number one priority," he said.
Ukraine also reported striking a key military enterprise in the Russian city of Kirov and targeting an oil facility about 1,350 kilometers away. Zelenskyy said the facility in Kirov supplies components for Russian aircraft and missile systems.
The United Nations Security Council is expected to hold an emergency meeting on Monday at Ukraine's request. Meanwhile, Ukraine's Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi stated that they had recaptured 700 square kilometers of territory in 2026 and handed over to his successor "an army that not only defends but also continues the offensive."
