Driver Presumed Drowned in Canal Crash
The incident occurred near Arıcan Mahallesi in Şanlıurfa's Akçakale district. Upon receiving a report that a car had plunged into a DSİ irrigation canal, numerous search and rescue, medical, gendarmerie, and Şanlıurfa Metropolitan Municipality search and rescue (ŞUAK) teams were dispatched to the scene. Initial assessments suggested that the driver, identified as A. T. (36), may have been swept away by the current and gone missing.
As teams prepared to launch an underwater search, information received by gendarmerie units completely changed the course of the investigation. A. T., who was presumed to have drowned in the canal, called his family shortly after the incident, stating that he was not in the vehicle, was alive, and had fled abroad.
Car Was Stolen
A deeper investigation by gendarmerie forces revealed the details behind the baffling escape plan. The car driven into the canal had been stolen by the suspect from his own cousin about a week earlier. Furthermore, A. T. had been involved in aggravated fraud cases, posing as a 'judge, prosecutor, and police officer' to deceive numerous citizens.
Staged Accident to Evade Capture
The suspect, who had an outstanding arrest warrant for various crimes, is believed to have deliberately driven the car into the canal in order to escape law enforcement pursuit and create a public perception that he was dead.
Following operations in the irrigation canal, the sunken car was pulled out of the water with a crane. No body was found inside the vehicle, and the car was towed to a gendarmerie impound lot for detailed forensic examination. After search efforts in Turkey yielded no results, a search was initiated in Syria.
Investigation Launched
Security forces have launched a comprehensive investigation to apprehend the fraud suspect, who allegedly faked his own death and fled abroad, and to clarify all aspects of the incident.
