Istanbul marked the sixth anniversary of Azerbaijan’s liberation of Karabakh from occupation during the 44-day Patriotic War with a light display. On the evening of November 8, Victory Day, the Azerbaijani flag was projected onto the historic Galata Tower in Beyoğlu. The blue, red and green colors, along with the crescent and star on the flag, could be seen from the shores of the Golden Horn and many parts of the city.

The 15 July Martyrs Bridge, which connects the two sides of the Bosphorus, was also specially illuminated for Victory Day. The bridge’s towers were lit green, while blue lights were placed on its suspension cables, giving the bridge the colors of the Azerbaijani flag during the evening.

The illumination coincided with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s presence in Azerbaijan for Victory Day. Erdoğan and his wife, Emine Erdoğan, were welcomed at Fuzuli International Airport by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and his wife, Mehriban Aliyeva, before Erdoğan and Aliyev held a joint news conference in Shusha. Erdoğan said there that the unity of hearts between the two countries was an “everlasting torch.”

Istanbul’s landmarks had previously also served as a backdrop for solidarity with Azerbaijan. Galata Tower and the Bosphorus bridges were illuminated in the colors of the Azerbaijani flag during the 44-day war in 2020 and on anniversaries of Azerbaijan’s independence.
