Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan spoke by phone with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty on Saturday, November 7. Turkish diplomatic sources told Anadolu Agency that the two ministers discussed developments in the Middle East and the Eastern Mediterranean.
Details of the call came from Cairo. Egyptian media, citing a statement by Egypt’s Foreign Ministry, reported that Abdelatty and Fidan assessed the escalating tensions in the region and efforts to reduce them.
The quadrilateral mechanism and Qatar
According to the statement, the two ministers stressed the importance of maintaining coordination and consultations between Türkiye and Egypt within the regional quadrilateral mechanism and in cooperation with Qatar. The joint effort aims to intensify contacts with the United States and Iran together, contain the current tensions and prevent the conflict from spreading.
The ministers also emphasized the priority of dialogue and diplomacy, saying that political compromises were needed to prevent a renewed military escalation and its severe consequences for regional security.

R4: Türkiye, Egypt, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia
R4, known as the quadrilateral mechanism, was established by Türkiye, Egypt, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia to support lasting stability based on regional ownership and strengthen dialogue on regional issues. The group’s foreign ministers met for the first time in Riyadh on March 18. On October 23, Fidan hosted both the R4 meeting in Istanbul and the R4+E3 meeting, attended by the E3—comprising the United Kingdom, Germany and France—with Italy also participating.
Fidan and Abdelatty most recently met face to face in Baghdad on October 17, on the sidelines of the meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.
Ankara’s diplomatic activity
The phone call came amid intense diplomatic activity by Ankara over the US-Iran channel. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan also spoke by phone with US President Donald Trump on the same day and said tensions between Iran and the United States must end and disputes must be resolved through diplomacy.
Qatar’s prime minister, who is mediating between the two sides, also confirmed on Saturday, according to Reuters, that the United States and Iran were continuing to work toward an agreement.
