In Galatasaray-Fenerbahçe derbies, the team scoring first lost 10 times
Statistics from the 138 league meetings between Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe ahead of their derby on Monday, October 26, highlighted the importance of scoring first. The team that scored first lost only 10 matches, while 20 ended goalless.
In the league derbies between Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe, who will face each other on Monday, October 26, in the ninth week of the Trendyol Süper Lig, the team that scored first lost only 10 of 138 matches.
Galatasaray won all 34 matches in which it scored first, while Fenerbahçe took three points in 48 matches in which it went ahead. Twenty-six derbies between the two teams ended in draws with goals.
The 10 matches lost by the team that scored first
The first match in which the team scoring first lost was played in the 1970-1971 season. Fenerbahçe won 2-1 after Galatasaray had taken the lead.
In the 1975-1976 season, Fenerbahçe went 1-0 ahead but lost the match 3-1. Galatasaray won 2-1 after falling behind in matches in the 1986-1987, 1987-1988 and 1993-1994 seasons, while the last derby in which the yellow-red side came from behind to win ended 3-1 in the 2019-2020 season.
Fenerbahçe also won a match after falling behind in the 1970-1971 season. The yellow-navy side has experienced a similar scenario four times since the 2008-2009 season.
Fenerbahçe won 4-1 at home in the 2008-2009 season after falling 1-0 behind, and won 2-1 away in the 2010-2011 season after trailing 1-0. The yellow-navy side also won 2-1 in the derbies in which it conceded the first goal in the 2012-2013 and 2021-2022 seasons.
Twenty derbies ended without a goal
Forty-six of the 138 league matches between the two teams ended in draws. Twenty of those matches produced no goals.
Twelve derbies in which Fenerbahçe took the lead ended in draws. Eight of those matches finished 1-1, while four ended 2-2. Galatasaray also surrendered leads in 14 derbies as its opponents equalized; nine of those matches finished 1-1 and four ended 2-2.
The derby in the 1982-1983 season ended 4-4. Fenerbahçe equalized at 1-1 after Galatasaray had taken a 1-0 lead. Although Galatasaray built a 4-1 advantage, Fenerbahçe leveled the match with goals scored in the second half.
Galatasaray took the lead in six matches this season
Galatasaray have recorded six wins, one draw and one loss in their eight league matches. The yellow-red side scored first in six of those games.
Although Galatasaray took a 1-0 lead against Çorum FK in the first week of the season, the match ended in a 2-2 draw. The team that scored first took three points against Erzurumspor FK, Başakşehir, Kocaelispor, Kasımpaşa and Gençlerbirliği.
The yellow-red side came from behind to beat Göztepe 3-2. Galatasaray, however, lost 4-0 to Trabzonspor after falling behind.
Fenerbahçe took the lead in seven of eight matches
Fenerbahçe recorded five wins, one draw and two losses in their eight Süper Lig matches. The yellow-navy side failed to score only in the match against Gaziantep FK, which ended 0-0, and scored first in seven games.
Fenerbahçe lost two matches despite scoring first. The team took a 1-0 lead away to Gençlerbirliği in the opening week of the season but lost the match 2-1.
The yellow-navy side also took a 1-0 lead in the Beşiktaş derby in the fourth week but left the field with a 2-1 defeat. Fenerbahçe took three points after going ahead against TÜMOSAN Konyaspor, Samsunspor, Eyüpspor, Çaykur Rizespor and Corendon Alanyaspor.
