Ireland beat Israel 3-0 in their Nations League match in Debrecen, Hungary, with goals from Troy Parrott, Adam Idah and Jack Moylan. Irish players wore black armbands, which FAI chief executive David Courell said were “in recognition of all lives lost in the conflict,” skipped pre-match handshakes with UEFA’s approval and bowed their heads during the Israeli anthem.
Moylan kissed and raised his armband after scoring, and captain Dara O’Shea pledged his match earnings to Gaza aid. Goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu had withdrawn from the squad. The teams meet again on October 4 in Bačka Topola, Serbia.
The Irish players also did not pose for the traditional pre-match team photograph. Captain Dara O’Shea kept his hands behind his back at the coin toss and did not shake hands with Israel captain Manor Solomon, though he did shake hands with the referee and his assistants.
