Israel announced that Iran launched a missile attack on its territory for the first time since the fragile ceasefire came into effect. Iranian state media also confirmed the missile launches, while multiple explosions were heard in northern Israel.
The Israeli military stated it was working to intercept the missiles but acknowledged that the defense was not completely impenetrable. Sirens were reported sounding in various parts of the country.
Beirut Attack Raises Tensions Again
Iran had threatened retaliation following Israel’s unannounced strike on the southern suburbs of Beirut. Israel described this attack as a response to Hezbollah, the Iran-backed group that had previously fired into northern Israel.
The strike targeted a residential building in southern Beirut, killing two people and injuring 20, according to Lebanon’s Ministry of Health.
Israel’s attack on Beirut came just days after Lebanon and Israeli governments reached a ceasefire agreement during talks hosted by the United States. However, Hezbollah rejected this agreement.
Ceasefire Efforts Continue Through Diplomacy
Iran has stated it will not accept any agreement that does not include an end to the conflict in Lebanon. Israeli airstrikes and ground operations in Lebanon, combined with Hezbollah’s refusal to disarm, complicate efforts for a comprehensive resolution.
On the same day, Pakistan’s Interior Minister visited Tehran and met with Iranian officials. According to Iranian state media, discussions included a message from Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, though the content of the message was not disclosed.
Foreign ministers of Egypt and Qatar also discussed "proposed elements" of a potential agreement between the US and Iran, but details were not released.
US President Donald Trump, in an interview, expressed a desire to see a more "surgical" strike against Hezbollah and stated he did not want Lebanon to be a mandatory part of the general ceasefire agreement with Iran.
While Iran maintains its influence over the Strait of Hormuz, the US continues its blockade of Iranian ports. This has affected shipments of oil, natural gas, and fertilizer, creating pressure on the global economy.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu aims to continue the attacks until he is convinced Hezbollah no longer poses a threat, ahead of elections scheduled later this year.
