The body of one of two people swept away in a car when the Büyük Dere (Göçbeyli) stream burst its banks on Saturday evening in Istanbul’s Pendik district, on the border with Kocaeli, has been recovered. The death toll from the floods in Istanbul has risen to six.
The incident happened on the evening of Oct. 17 between Pendik’s Kadıllı and Göçbeyli neighborhoods, when a car carrying three people was swept away by the swollen stream. One man escaped on his own and was taken to hospital. Of the two who went missing, the body of Fatih Demirbaş has been found, while the search for the other continues.
Istanbul Governor Davut Gül said searches were being carried out along a 17-kilometer stretch of the stream on land, in the river and at sea, with the coast guard and underwater teams taking part. Because the area where the missing were last seen lies in Kocaeli’s Gebze district, teams from both provinces are working together.

Missing Turkmen man found in the Golden Horn
The toll also rose after the body of Murat Babajanov, a 30-year-old Turkmen national who went missing in the Oct. 14 downpour, was found in the Golden Horn.
The search continues for Ahmet Derin, 63, and Haşim Ciritoğulları, 55, who went missing in Sarıyer’s Ayazağa neighborhood. Derin’s car was pulled from the Kağıthane stream, but he has not been found. Gül had said the missing may have been carried 5 to 10 kilometers downstream.
Buildings in the Ayazağa stream bed to be demolished
Gül announced that unlicensed, earthquake-vulnerable structures without title deeds in the Ayazağa stream bed would be demolished, including 19 shops, two houses, a Quran course, and the Ayazağa Atatürk Stadium and its stands. The demolitions will clear the way for İSKİ’s stream rehabilitation project, and the Urban Transformation Presidency has opened an office in the area on the instructions of Environment Minister Murat Kurum.
Gül had earlier said 10,000 liras had been deposited into the accounts of 5,000 residents as emergency support rather than compensation. Damage assessments are expected to be completed by Monday, when schools will reopen. He also said water samples showed no problems.
Heavy rain continues across Marmara
Heavy rain hit the Marmara region again on Sunday. In Istanbul’s Şile district, an overflowing stream closed Üsküdar Avenue and two people were rescued from a stalled car. In Sakarya, two bridges were destroyed and three badly damaged in one district, while streets flooded in Karasu. In Bursa’s İnegöl, floodwater swamped a tent area housing about 1,000 seasonal farm workers and a bridge collapsed. A retaining wall collapsed in Zonguldak.
The meteorological service had issued orange warnings for 10 provinces, including Istanbul. Noting that the ground is saturated, Gül said residents in areas at risk of landslides or unsafe buildings can be housed through district governorates, warning: “If in doubt, do not take any risks.”
