Türkiye's Ministry of National Defence announced that the first ocean-condition flight trials of the KALKAN vertical takeoff and landing unmanned aerial vehicle (VTOL UAV), deployed aboard the TCG Gelibolu frigate serving with the Somali Naval Task Group, were conducted in the Indian Ocean.
The ministry also released photographs from the trials. Previously flown from the TCG Anadolu and TCG Burgazada, KALKAN was tested this time under the Indian Ocean's varying maritime conditions.
It takes off from ships without a runway

Developed by Baykar, KALKAN takes off vertically using four electric motors before transitioning to horizontal flight with its internal combustion engine. This allows it to take off and land from a ship's deck without the need for a runway.
The vehicle can remain airborne for 6 hours, has a maximum takeoff weight of 78 kilograms and a payload capacity of 3 kilograms. KALKAN can carry an electro-optical and infrared camera as well as a laser rangefinder; its communications range exceeds 70 kilometers, while its service ceiling is above 10,000 feet.
