Frightening moments unfolded during a traditional Ravana effigy-burning ceremony held in India as part of the Hindu festival of Dussehra. After the giant effigy was set alight, the fireworks placed inside it began exploding in every direction, sending numerous rockets and sparks toward spectators.
The footage shows the person who ignited the effigy quickly moving away as the crowd fled while the flames rose. Indian media reported that the incident took place in Uttar Pradesh, but the exact location and details of the incident could not be independently verified.
There has been no official statement on whether anyone was injured. The footage, which began circulating on October 21, has been viewed millions of times.
Victory of good over evil
Dussehra symbolizes the Hindu god Rama's victory over the demon king Ravana, representing the triumph of good over evil. During the festival, giant effigies representing Ravana and packed with fireworks are burned across the country.
Accidents sometimes occur during these ceremonies, which are held in crowded public squares. In 2018, a train struck a crowd watching the burning of a Ravana effigy from railway tracks in Amritsar, Punjab, killing nearly 60 people.
