The Formula 1 World Championship excitement continued at Belgium’s Spa-Francorchamps circuit. Mercedes’ 19-year-old Italian driver Kimi Antonelli won the race to strengthen his championship lead.
Antonelli took the checkered flag 1.952 seconds ahead of second-placed Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc. Leclerc briefly took the lead with a pit stop during a virtual safety car period, but Antonelli later reclaimed the position.
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen finished third, securing the team’s 300th Formula 1 podium. George Russell, who started the race as his closest championship rival, retired on the opening lap after contact with teammate Lewis Hamilton sent him into the gravel trap.
Hamilton received a 5-second penalty for the collision with Russell and finished fourth. He was also under investigation for an unsafe release during his pit stop, which could drop him to fifth in the final classification.
Speaking after the race, Antonelli said: “It’s great to be back on top after a few tough races. It was a challenging race; we lost the lead with the VSC but then got it back. We were a bit lucky today in terms of the championship, but you have to seize every opportunity because we saw how quickly things can change.”
The rest of the top 10: McLaren’s Oscar Piastri was fifth, Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar sixth, reigning champion Lando Norris, who started from last place, finished seventh for McLaren, Audi’s Gabriel Bortoleto eighth, Racing Bulls’ Arvid Lindblad ninth, and Alpine’s Franco Colapinto 10th.
This victory was Antonelli’s sixth win in 10 races this season. The Italian driver, who also set the fastest lap in qualifying to continue Mercedes’ clean sweep of pole positions this season, extended his points lead over closest rival Russell to 50 points.
