Türkiye’s Ambassador in Jakarta Prof. Dr. Talip Küçükcan delivered the opening lecture, titled “Türkiye’s Peace Diplomacy,” at the “Diplomacy Training” (Pelatihan Diplomasi Islam Wasathiyah) program organized in cooperation with the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) and Darunnajah University.
Darunnajah said the advanced-level Wasatiyyah Islamic Diplomacy Training program began Saturday, Nov. 7, at Darunnajah University’s campus in Ulujami, in southern Jakarta. The program, supported by Indonesia’s National Zakat Agency (BAZNAS), was inaugurated by MUI Deputy Chairman Dr. K.H. Marsudi Syuhud.
Alongside Küçükcan, Darunnajah University President and Darunnajah Pesantren administrator K.H. Hadiyanto Arief, MUI Chairman for Foreign Relations and International Cooperation Prof. Dr. Sudarnoto Abdul Hakim, and MUI Secretary-General Dr. Amirsyah Tambunan also attended the opening.

“Education is at the forefront of peace diplomacy”
Darunnajah said Küçükcan positioned education as the foremost priority in implementing peace diplomacy. “Education is placed at the forefront because it is where the perspectives of societies around the world are shaped. Inclusive education instills the values of tolerance, dialogue, respect for diversity and intercultural literacy,” the ambassador said.
MUI Deputy Chairman Syuhud, meanwhile, emphasized that the principle of Wasatiyyah Islam, meaning an understanding based on moderation and balance, should form the foundation of Indonesian diplomacy. Syuhud said justice, balance and moderation are important resources for Indonesian Muslims to serve as a bridge to dialogue and peace amid global conflicts.

Simulations of the UN, ASEAN and OIC
About 60 people are taking part in the training, including MUI officials who previously completed the basic-level program, staff members of Islamic civil society organizations and academics. Unlike the basic-level program, which focuses on concepts, the advanced-level program devotes more time to practical work and diplomacy simulations.
The program covers the history of Islamic diplomacy, negotiation strategies, diplomatic communication, diplomatic document drafting and international protocol. It also includes a multilateral session modeled on UN procedure, a special ASEAN meeting on Myanmar, and simulations of an Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) summit addressing Palestine’s independence. Senior diplomats, Indonesian Foreign Ministry officials and leaders of the Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia (FPCI) are also serving as instructors.
