German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said migrants who come to Germany from Islamic countries and do not accept the country’s historical responsibility regarding the Holocaust should not remain in Germany. Merz made the remarks at a reception for Jewish athletes in Berlin.
Merz said, "Our country’s historical responsibility applies equally to those who come to Germany from Islamic countries. Anyone who does not accept this responsibility must leave our country."

Referring in his speech to a 1985 address by former President Richard von Weizsäcker in the Bundestag, Merz said this approach applied to German society as a whole. Merz said, "I regard these words as an unchanging principle. In terms of today’s circumstances, I would also like to add: This responsibility also applies to migrants who come to Germany."
Germany is home to around 3 million people of Turkish origin and the largest Turkish community outside Türkiye. Merz’s remarks drew attention because they directly concerned the country’s Muslim community.
