Following his meeting with Greek President Konstantinos Tasoulas in Athens, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun called for the full implementation of the U.S.-backed framework agreement between Lebanon and Israel.
Aoun said the agreement must be implemented by both sides without selective application. The Lebanese presidency announced his remarks on the U.S.-based social media platform X.
Aoun emphasizes diplomacy
Stating that Lebanon and its people were tired of wars, Aoun said the aim of negotiations with Israel was to end the state of hostility. He asked Greece to contribute, as much as possible, to the implementation of the framework agreement.
“We are determined to end the state of hostility. The solution lies not in war, but in diplomacy.”
Aoun also thanked Greece for its political, humanitarian and military support for Lebanon. He said Lebanon aimed to develop its relations with Greece in all areas in a way that would serve their common interests.
Scope of the Lebanon-Israel agreement
Aoun said Lebanon’s stability was important for the stability of the region and Europe, and that any instability in the country could have far-reaching negative consequences. He said they expected support from friendly countries, especially Greece.
Since the beginning of March, Israel has carried out extensive attacks in southern Lebanon, saying that it was targeting Hezbollah. Hezbollah also carried out attacks on Israeli forces stationed in southern Lebanon; these developments led to the de facto end of the ceasefire that had been in effect since late 2024.
Lebanon and Israel signed a U.S.-backed framework agreement in June. The agreement provides for Israel’s gradual withdrawal from the occupied Lebanese territories and the deployment of the Lebanese army in the areas vacated.
The agreement also includes the disarmament of armed groups, referring to Hezbollah.
