A regulation aimed at preventing children under 16 in Malaysia from opening social media accounts has come into effect. The new application requires platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube to implement an age verification system. It was stated that the regulation aims to protect young people from harmful content on social media. The application, which is said to affect approximately 8 million social media users, may impose fines of up to 2.5 million dollars on companies that do not comply. Authorities also announced that they will provide a transition period for platforms to implement age verification systems.
