Mercedes has filed a Right of Review application concerning the Monaco Grand Prix result. The application was made after the race order was brought back into focus by the subsequent cancellation of a pit lane speeding penalty given to Pierre Gasly.
Gasly crossed the finish line in third place in Monte Carlo but was demoted to seventh after two five-second penalties were applied for speeding in the pit lane. Alpine's later appeal was accepted, and the French driver's penalties were cancelled, restoring his third-place result.
The decision drew a reaction from other teams that were penalised and lost position during the race. Following this development, Mercedes requested that its own situation be re-evaluated.
The team's appeal concerns George Russell, who was classified 12th in Monaco. Russell received a penalty for speeding in the pit lane and faced an additional sanction for failing to correctly serve his initial penalty during his pit stop.
At an FIA press conference in Barcelona, Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff said the implications of the Gasly decision for Russell were being assessed. Wolff stated that teams face time constraints, but they wanted the FIA to examine possible solutions for Russell's race.
Wolff stressed that Mercedes was raising not Gasly's result but the potential consequences for George Russell. He said the in-race penalty given to Russell equated to roughly 20 seconds of race time, and they were questioning what the outcome could have been.
Within the Mercedes camp, an assessment was also made that overturning the result appears unrealistic. Nevertheless, the team decided to apply to have the matter re-examined, even if only as a possibility.
It is stated that the 96-hour appeal window restarted following the revised classification in Monaco. This opened the door for Mercedes to submit its application.
Isack Hadjar, who was initially third after Gasly's penalties were lifted, lost his first podium of the season. It is reported that Red Bull may also evaluate a further appeal option following this development.
