Türkiye’s Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar held a comprehensive meeting with Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev at the ministry’s building in Ankara.
During Thursday’s meeting, the latest developments at the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant, ongoing work to commission its first unit and progress on the other three reactors were discussed.

Nuclear energy capacity target
Bayraktar said Türkiye’s 70-year-old goal in the field of nuclear energy had become a reality with Akkuyu. The minister said nuclear energy efforts launched with Akkuyu would be expanded through new plants in Sinop and Thrace, as well as small modular reactors.

Bayraktar announced that Türkiye aims to increase its nuclear energy capacity to 20,000 megawatts by 2050.
Akkuyu commissioning schedule
Anton Dudushenko, chairman of the board of Akkuyu Nuclear JSC, previously said that 2026 would be the year when the plant’s first reactor would be commissioned.

The first phase of Akkuyu, Türkiye’s first nuclear power plant, began in April 2023. All units of the plant are planned to be commissioned in 2028 under an agreement signed by Türkiye and Russia in 2010.
