A new operation was carried out in the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office investigation into the alleged Alihan Kuriş criminal organization. Simultaneous searches were conducted at 28 residences and 16 workplaces in 12 provinces, centered in Ankara.
Of the 38 suspects named in detention orders, 22 were detained. Fourteen were found to be abroad, and efforts are continuing to catch the remaining two.
The charges
The suspects are accused of leading a criminal organization for profit, aggravated fraud, violating the Tax Procedure Law and laundering proceeds of crime. The investigation also covers unusual cash movements allegedly conducted through high-capital companies.
Thirty-two companies found to have financial and commercial ties to the organization operate in sectors including construction, food, jewelry, maritime and education. According to NTV, MASAK financial intelligence reviews found that more than 100 billion liras were moved abroad by various methods.

Arrests and trustees in earlier waves
In the first wave of the investigation, Alihan Kuriş, leader of the community known as the Süleymancılar, was also detained, and 32 of the suspects brought to court on Aug. 16, including Kuriş, were arrested. In later waves, trustees were appointed first to 11 companies and three associations, then to 23 companies.
Justice Minister Akın Gürlek and Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi have said the investigation has nothing to do with religious activities and focuses on suspicious financial transactions.
