On January 19, 2026, a collapse occurred in an unlicensed mine operated in Dilaver Neighborhood of Zonguldak. In the incident, 46-year-old miner Erol Türksever was trapped under the soil. Türksever, who was rescued from the collapse by the teams dispatched to the area, was taken to the hospital but lost his life. Türksever, a father of four children, was buried in Kırat Cemetery after the funeral prayer at Rüzgarlımeşe Central Mosque. Within the investigation launched regarding the incident, Kerim Şeref and Erdem Kiret, who are alleged to be the owners of the illegal mine, were detained. After their procedures at the police station, the two suspects were arrested following their referral to the courthouse. The incident has brought new discussions about unlicensed mining operations and occupational safety to the agenda.
