An important development occurred in the case of 12-year-old Hande Çinkitaş, who was killed on January 4, 2001, in Kadıköy by being hit on the head with a hammer and having her throat slit at home. During the long trial process, father Nezih Çinkitaş and stepmother Şehnaz Çinkitaş were initially acquitted. However, the 1st Criminal Chamber of the Istanbul Regional Court of Justice overturned the local court's decision and sentenced Nezih Çinkitaş to life imprisonment for 'Aggravated intentional murder.' This decision was found legally appropriate by the Court of Cassation and unanimously approved on April 1, 2026. The Forensic Medicine Institute report detected a strong DNA profile belonging to father Nezih Çinkitaş on the sharp tip of the knife used in the incident. In light of this evidence, Çinkitaş was taken into custody by the Public Order Branch teams at his home in Kadıköy Göztepe. Denying the charges during interrogation, Çinkitaş stated that he saw Hande lying on the floor when he arrived home on the day of the incident. The arrested Çinkitaş was sent to Kartal Type H prison. Numerous witness statements were taken during the investigation, and all witnesses testified against Çinkitaş. The file was recorded as one of the long-followed child murder cases in Turkey.
