The opening day of the International Aviation Exhibition ILA in Berlin was disrupted when pro-Palestinian demonstrators blocked the roads. The protesters chanted "Free Palestine" slogans and halted transportation on routes leading to the event venue.
Due to the protest, many delegates and visitors had to reach the exhibition area on foot. As buses were unable to enter the site, the crowd proceeded on foot towards the event center near Berlin-Schönefeld Airport.
During the incident, a significant police presence was observed in the area, and some protesters were removed without being detained. Some visitors expressed complaints about having to walk to the fair.
The fair hosts over 750 participants from 37 countries
This year, the ILA fair is held from June 10 to 14, bringing together more than 750 participants from 37 countries.
The event's start has reignited discussions about Europe's challenges in building military capacity. Prior to the fair, the shelving of the joint fighter jet project between France and Germany due to industrial disputes further intensified this debate.
It was reported that Chancellor Friedrich Merz was also scheduled to attend the fair. The protest on the opening day notably highlighted security measures and access issues.
