Panathinaikos basketball club announced that it will seek legal action over allegations of match-fixing and illegal betting in Greece’s first-division games.
In a statement, the club alleged that referees assigned to the games were appointed by certain individuals. The statement said that matches officiated by some referees who were under investigation for serious crimes and reportedly had hundreds of thousands of euros in cash at their homes were still being played.
We will seek legal action to reclaim what was taken from us by a corrupt system.

An investigation by the Athens prosecutor’s office lasting three months uncovered findings indicating that match-fixing and illegal betting took place in first-division games. Five people, including Hellenic Basketball Federation President Vangelis Liolios and referees, were detained as part of the investigation.
Among the detained referees is Vasiliki Tsaroucha, who officiated the BKT EuroCup game between Türk Telekom and Lithuanian club Siauliai Basketball. Tsaroucha was detained at Athens Airport by officials waiting for her upon her return from Türkiye.
Reports on the investigation also said that €820,000 in cash was found at the country house of a referee living in Katerini.
