An underwater cleanup was conducted off the Tuzla coast as part of World Environment Day, World Oceans Day, and Marmara Sea Day to reduce marine pollution. More than 30 professional divers participated in the operation, which was also supported by the municipality.
During the cleanup, debris from boats sunk in the storm on January 8 was retrieved from underwater. Numerous materials threatening the marine ecosystem were carefully collected one by one.
Remnants from 22 sunken boats recovered
The operation recovered the main remains of 4 out of 22 sunken boats from the sea. Additionally, boat tarps, solar panels, chains, boat parts, vehicle tires, fire extinguishers, ropes, boat seats, plastic pipes, toilets, metal profiles, electrical cables, and various plastic wastes were collected.
The recovered materials were set aside for disposal. The operation brought to the surface waste accumulated on the seabed that posed environmental risks.
Sadun Boro commemorated underwater
As part of the event, Sadun Boro, a significant figure in Turkish maritime history, was commemorated with a special underwater program on the 11th anniversary of his death. Thus, the cleanup also served as a memorial event alongside its environmental message.
Students from Okan University supported the efforts by assisting in transporting, documenting, and reporting the debris removed from the sea. At the end of the program, participating divers were awarded certificates of participation.
"Seas are a shared heritage" message emphasized
Sinem Balaç, Secretary General of the Respect the Depths Diving Community, stated that seas are a shared heritage. Balaç emphasized the need for more frequent initiatives like this to leave cleaner seas for future generations and highlighted the importance of not only institutions but also citizens being more environmentally conscious.
