OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said artificial intelligence had crossed a critical threshold this year. Speaking at the opening session of the International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (ADIPEC) in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, Altman said, "At the beginning of this year, AI was mostly not as smart as our smartest scientists; now it is mostly smarter than them."
Altman said AI was unable to perform many white-collar jobs at the beginning of the year but can now handle many parts of those jobs, adding, "I think we'll get through all of these smoothly."
"Control must remain with people"
Responding to questions from The National Editor-in-Chief Mina Al-Oraibi, Altman stressed that control of the future must remain with people. "There should not be a handover to AI. AI should be a tool made for people and serving people, not the other way around," Altman said, adding that there was "no room for debate" on this issue. He also said the industry must show the world that it can prevent serious safety and alignment problems as systems become more powerful.
One-word answer: energy
Describing the biggest challenge he faces today in one word as "energy," Altman said the amount of energy used per query had fallen sharply, but as efficiency increased, people were using AI far more. He said the AI and energy industries had an obligation to society to meet this demand.
Altman said costs could fall in almost every area, but noted that "atoms are still atoms," meaning that the physical energy supply would remain the main factor determining AI's cost and availability. He said that six years ago, OpenAI's heaviest internal user consumed about 100,000 tokens per month, whereas that figure now matched the global average per person, while the largest user consumed about 500 billion tokens.

Altman also claimed that OpenAI had solved one of the Millennium Prize Problems in a study lasting about four days and involving 10,000 AI agents running an upcoming GPT model; the claim could not be independently verified. Partnerships between OpenAI, the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and G42 were also announced at ADIPEC.
