Mercedes' Italian driver Kimi Antonelli became the youngest world champion in the history of Formula 1 at the age of 20. Antonelli secured the title by finishing third at the Mexican Grand Prix with four races remaining in the season.
The previous record belonged to Sebastian Vettel, who won his first championship in 2010 at the age of 23 years and 134 days. Antonelli is Italy's first Formula 1 world champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953, ending a 73-year wait.
Verstappen wins the race
Red Bull driver Max Verstappen won the season's 19th race at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez Circuit in Mexico's capital. Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton finished second, 0.799 seconds behind Verstappen. Antonelli, who only needed ninth place to secure the championship, took the chequered flag in third, 4.006 seconds behind the winner.

With this result, Antonelli reached 380 points and moved 119 points clear of second-placed Verstappen. The Italian became the 36th different driver to win the championship.
Reaches the top in his second season
Antonelli replaced Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes in 2025 and won the Formula 1 championship in his second season. The young driver claimed his first victory at the Chinese Grand Prix in March, then won five consecutive races and never relinquished the lead. Antonelli also won in Belgium and Spain, while his victory at the Italian Grand Prix after starting 19th made him the first Italian to win at Monza since 1966.
In a season overshadowed by his teammate George Russell, who had started the campaign as the favorite, Formula 1 saw a driver win his first championship for the second consecutive time following Lando Norris' 2025 title. The next race on the calendar is the Brazilian Grand Prix, scheduled for November 6-8.
