The Saturday Mothers/People gathered at Galatasaray Square during the 1101st week meeting to demand justice for Mehmet Şerif Avşar, who was forcibly disappeared by JİTEM officers in Diyarbakır in 1994. The group emphasized that Avşar's fate has been unknown for 32 years and that the perpetrators have largely gone unpunished. Setenay Yarıcı, who read the statement, reported that Avşar was detained by plainclothes individuals while working at his family's workplace in Diyarbakır and was then taken to the JİTEM center. It was stated that Avşar's lifeless body was found two weeks later on the Lice road, and although some perpetrators were sentenced in the trials, not all responsible parties were prosecuted. The statement recalled that the European Court of Human Rights condemned Turkey for not conducting an effective investigation, and called for the state to accept responsibility and for the truth to be revealed. The Saturday Mothers reiterated their call for the truth to be fully disclosed and for actions to be taken in accordance with universal legal norms.
