Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan held telephone talks with Türkiye’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Jassem Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah.
The talks addressed developments in the region and joint efforts to contain rising regional tensions. The parties assessed initiatives that could contribute to preserving the region’s security and stability.
Regional tensions and mediation efforts
Key issues on the regional agenda include mutual threats of military escalation between the United States and Iran, as well as the control exercised by the Houthis over several points near the strategic Bab el-Mandeb Strait in Yemen.
Qatar announced that its mediation team was working to restart talks between the United States and Iran. Doha said that different ideas for resuming negotiations had been discussed by the parties over two weeks.
Attacks on Iran and regional repercussions
The war waged by the United States and Israel against Iran on February 28 resulted in the deaths of thousands of people. Iran responded with attacks on Israel and U.S. bases in countries across the region.
The United States carried out military strikes on several sites in Iran after the negotiation process stalled over disputes concerning navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and the transport of energy and goods.
Houthi attacks
The Houthis targeted oil tankers and Saudi-owned ships along regional maritime routes. Civilian airports and energy production facilities in Saudi Arabia were also among the targets of the attacks, which caused deaths and material damage.
Saudi Arabia has led the coalition supporting Yemen’s government since March 2015. The Houthis are accused of receiving support from Iran and have controlled Yemen’s capital, Sana’a, and several provinces since September 2014.
