Türkiye’s Deputy Foreign Minister Musa Kulaklı Kaya will chair the extraordinary meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
The 23rd meeting, scheduled to take place tomorrow, will focus primarily on electing a new secretary-general to replace the incumbent, Hussein Ibrahim Taha. The issue of Palestine will also be addressed.
Türkiye to highlight regional peace
In his address, Kulaklı Kaya is expected to discuss the role of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation in the face of current regional and international developments. The meeting will assess steps to strengthen the organisation’s contribution to regional peace, stability and prosperity.
Türkiye is expected to reiterate its call for an immediate end to Israel’s attacks on Gaza and the full implementation of a ceasefire. It will also stress the need for humanitarian aid to reach Gaza continuously and without obstruction.
The Palestinian issue and a two-state solution
Kulaklı Kaya is expected to describe safeguarding the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people and implementing a two-state solution based on international law as the two fundamental conditions for lasting peace.
The address will also call for Israel’s violations of international law not to be treated as faits accomplis and for international efforts to hold Israel accountable to be strengthened.
Warning over the West Bank and Jerusalem
Türkiye is expected to voice concern over the displacement of Palestinian families in the West Bank and the increase in settler violence described as being supported by the Israeli government.
The meeting will also address the warning that provocations targeting Al-Aqsa Mosque and other holy sites in Jerusalem are increasing regional tensions.
Risks posed by regional attacks
Kulaklı Kaya is also expected to address the risks posed by Israel’s attacks on Lebanon, Syria and other countries in the region.
Türkiye will argue that the shared will of the Islamic world must be translated into concrete and effective steps, and that solidarity, coordination and joint work under the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation must be strengthened.
