Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said Russia lacked the capacity to launch a large-scale attack on NATO because its military forces are tied down in the war in Ukraine.
Sikorski commented after Poland announced last week that it had received information from various sources indicating that Russia was "preparing something major" this year. Asked what Russia’s plan might be, he said only Russian President Vladimir Putin could know.
The Polish foreign minister said NATO must be prepared, avoid manipulation and be able to respond swiftly as an alliance to provocations.
Sikorski suggested that Russia could undertake a smaller-scale action capable of creating disputes among the allies. He said such an incident could set European and U.S. allies against one another over whether NATO’s Article 5, which provides for collective defense, should be invoked.
Sikorski also said Moscow could continue its current activities in a more aggressive manner. Western governments accuse Russia of carrying out sabotage operations and violating airspace as part of a hybrid warfare campaign targeting NATO and European Union countries.
