The Swiss Football Association announced that Granit Xhaka and Breel Embolo will return to the national team squad starting in November. The decision was made after the legal proceedings related to the two players’ COVID-19 vaccination documents were concluded.
The federation’s management conducted a comprehensive review of the case, which dated back to 2021 and 2022. The review considered the sporting consequences of the incident and the sanctions previously imposed on the players after the legal process ended.
Two players missed four international matches
Xhaka had admitted that he facilitated travel and participation in competitions using a false document in 2022. Following the development, the Swiss Football Association agreed that the midfielder would not take part in the national team’s October matches against Scotland, Slovenia and North Macedonia.
Embolo was removed from the national team squad in September for the same reason. The two players missed a total of four international matches in September and October.
Xhaka will remain captain
Switzerland national team director Pierluigi Tami said the federation had examined the case from different perspectives and had considered each player’s specific circumstances, the completed legal process and the sporting sanctions that had been imposed. Tami described the two players’ return in November as a responsible and appropriate step.

Head coach Murat Yakin and his technical staff decided, after consulting the players’ council, that Xhaka would remain captain of the national team. The federation said the decision was unanimous.
Squad for November matches to be announced on November 5
Yakin is expected to announce the squad for Switzerland’s final two UEFA Nations League matches on Thursday, November 5. Xhaka and Embolo are among the candidates for selection.
Switzerland is preparing for its next Nations League matches after winning its first four games. The team will face Slovenia away in Maribor on November 13 and host Scotland in St. Gallen on November 16.
