Syria’s Counter-Terrorism Administration said it arrested Khaldoun Hussein Mubarak, a former pilot in the ousted Assad regime’s army, in the Latakia countryside.
Mubarak came to prominence in March 2020, when his warplane was shot down near the town of Saraqib in eastern Idlib. According to Syrian media, he survived by parachuting out of the jet, which was downed during air raids on civilian targets and residential areas.
He is accused of committing war crimes and targeting residential areas during the years of the Syrian revolution. Having reportedly been in hiding since, he was captured in a security operation.
Syrian security forces detained more than 15 pilot officers in Tartus, Latakia and Aleppo in September. The Assad regime fell in December 2024.
