The 6th World Nomad Games will be held in Kyrgyzstan from August 31 to September 6 under the slogan “Unity in strength, unity in spirit.” The event aims to preserve, develop and promote the ethnic sports and traditional culture of nomadic peoples.
Opening ceremony to be held in Bishkek
The opening ceremony will take place on August 31 at 9 p.m. local time at Bishkek Arena Stadium in the capital Bishkek, which has a capacity of 51,000 spectators. The ceremony will be held concurrently with celebrations marking the 35th anniversary of Kyrgyzstan’s Independence Day.
The ceremony will showcase Kyrgyzstan’s natural beauty, nomadic culture, hospitality and the snow leopard, the symbol of the event. Reforms carried out in the country under Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov will also be presented to the world as part of the program.
Heads of state and delegations attending the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Council of Heads of State summit, to be held under Kyrgyzstan’s chairmanship on September 1, are expected to attend the opening ceremony.
Water Caravan to symbolize the opening
Water, one of the main symbols of the World Nomad Games, will represent unity and solidarity at the opening ceremony. As part of the “Water Caravan” project, water collected from sacred springs in the Tian Shan Mountains was taken through 40 cities across the country over 40 days.
The water, brought to Bishkek in special vessels by representatives of Kyrgyzstan’s various regions, will be combined with water carried by delegations from participating countries. Mixing all the water in a single large vessel will symbolize the ties among the peoples of the world, cultural harmony and mutual respect.
Competitions to be held in 42 sports
More than 4,000 athletes and delegation representatives from over 90 countries, as well as thousands of foreign tourists, are expected to attend the event. Competitions will be held in 42 sports, including horse racing, national wrestling, traditional intellectual games, martial arts, traditional archery and national bird hunting.
Three thousand volunteers will work to run the events. The Cabinet of Ministers of the Kyrgyz Republic is overseeing the organization of the Games.
Events to take place around Issyk-Kul
Cultural programs and the official closing ceremonies will be held in the city of Cholpon-Ata on the shores of Issyk-Kul and at Kyrchyn Gorge. The event, built on three main pillars—sports, culture and science—will feature a total of 835 cultural activities.
The main venues include Kök Börü Arena at the city hippodrome in Cholpon-Ata, the Gazprom Sports Complex, the Ruh Ordo Chyngyz Aitmatov Cultural Center, the Kurmanjan Datka Nomadic Civilization Center at the Örnök resort, the Eurasia Hotel Sports Area at the Kara-Oy resort and the Dordoy Nomad Amphitheater at the Bosteri resort.
Mounted archery, short- and long-distance horse races and other equestrian competitions can be watched at Cholpon-Ata Hippodrome and Kök Börü Arena. National and international wrestling competitions will be held at the Gazprom Sports Complex, while tournaments in intellectual and strategy games will take place at the Eurasia Hotel Sports Area.
Traditional performances to be held at Kyrchyn Gorge
Hundreds of tents and large stages will be set up at Kyrchyn Gorge. The area will host ethno-markets, traditional archery, eagle and falcon hunting demonstrations, tug-of-war, pole vaulting, arm wrestling and tent-pitching competitions.
The gorge will also host traditional cuisine festivals, sports demonstrations, handicraft exhibitions, traditional music and dance programs, and ethnocultural festivals. Craftspeople from different regions of Kyrgyzstan will introduce visitors to rituals at risk of being forgotten and local culinary products.
Scientific conference and closing program
An international scientific conference titled “Nomadic Civilizations: Heritage, Paradigms and Future Perspectives” will be held on September 3 at the Kurmanjan Datka Nomadic Civilization Center at the Örnök resort.
The official closing ceremony, concert program and handover ceremony for the right to host the 7th World Nomad Games will be held at the city hippodrome on September 6 from 6 p.m. to midnight local time.
Official mascot “Batay”
The snow leopard, a symbol of the mountains of Kyrgyzstan and the country’s national identity, has been designated as the official mascot of the event. The mascot, named “Batay,” symbolizes strength, freedom and an unshakable stance.
The word “Ba” in the mascot’s name was explained as meaning leopard, while “Tay” was described as an abbreviation of a word meaning support.
The Games return to Kyrgyzstan
The first three World Nomad Games were held in Kyrgyzstan in 2014, 2016 and 2018. The event was later held in Turkey’s Iznik district and Kazakhstan’s Astana, returning to its starting point with the sixth Games.
In addition to watching the competitions, visitors will be able to take part in workshops, explore traditional handicrafts and experience nomadic cuisine.
