Infrastructure work has been completed at the Karacadağ Organized Industrial Zone, established on an area of approximately 3,000 decares at the foothills of Karacadağ, 30 kilometers along the Diyarbakır-Şanlıurfa highway. Following work that began in May 2023, factories in the zone have started production.
Of the 123 plots in the industrial zone, 86 have been allocated to 84 entrepreneurs. Project work is continuing on eight of the allocated plots, while factory construction is ongoing on 67 plots.
Production begins at three factories
Factories established on three plots have started production, while six completed factories are conducting trial production. Around 150 people are employed at the facilities that have begun production.
Beşir Yılmaz, deputy chairman of the Karacadağ Organized Industrial Zone's board of directors, said there was an employment commitment for 4,600 people across the 86 allocated plots. Yılmaz said employment could increase further as the number of shifts rises.
Yılmaz said Diyarbakır's existing organized industrial zone was unable to meet demand and that the city needed to industrialize. He announced that the long-term goal was for the Karacadağ Organized Industrial Zone to expand to an area of 45,000 decares and create between 150,000 and 200,000 jobs.
Yılmaz said there were 37 vacant plots in the industrial zone, adding that six applications had been submitted for these areas and that allocation procedures were ongoing. Yılmaz said the investment process in the area was advancing amid an atmosphere of peace and security, while the war in Iran had slowed the demand process to some extent.
Furniture production capacity increases
Mehmet Bekçi, owner of a furniture factory that has started production in the Karacadağ Organized Industrial Zone, said they had previously operated in four separate workshops in the city center, covering a total area of 500 square meters. Bekçi said the new facility employed 60 people in an enclosed area of 12,000 square meters and was currently operating at 50% capacity.
Bekçi said they had previously produced 2,000 doors per month, but that production had risen to 4,000 after moving operations under one roof. He said the goal was to increase monthly production to 8,000 doors and employment to 120 people in 2027 once full capacity was reached.
Employment provided for nearby neighborhoods
Hüseyin Akyüz, who lives in Kaldırım neighborhood near the industrial zone, said he had previously worked in livestock farming and had started working at the furniture factory. Akyüz said he had found a job at the facility, located 2–3 kilometers from his home, and that investments in the area were providing employment opportunities for people living in nearby neighborhoods.
Vehicle air-conditioning components to be produced
Veysi Özfidan, owner of a factory producing fans and fan motors used in vehicle air-conditioning systems, said they had previously worked with 12 people in a 400-square-meter workshop at the Mega Industrial Estate. Özfidan said the new factory had been built on an area of 7,000 square meters, of which 4,000 square meters was enclosed.
Özfidan said they had started production at the new facility about a month earlier and that the number of employees had risen to 20, adding that they aimed to employ around 50 people at full capacity. Özfidan said they had produced an average of 100 fan motors per day in the workshop and planned to increase that figure to at least 400 at the new facility.
