Turkey's Embassy in Tunisia organized a photo exhibition and commemoration program for the 10th anniversary of July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day.
Turkey's Embassy in Tunisia organized a commemoration program in the capital Tunis for the 10th anniversary of July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day.
The photo exhibition, organized with the support of TİKA, featured frames captured by Anadolu Agency photojournalists during the coup attempt on July 15, 2016.
The event was attended by Turkey's Ambassador to Tunisia Ahmet Misbah Demircan, embassy staff, representatives of Turkish institutions and organizations, and Turkish citizens living in Tunisia.
The program began with a minute of silence for the July 15 martyrs and the recitation of the Turkish National Anthem after the opening speech.
Participants watched a short documentary depicting the night of the coup attempt and the people's resistance. The documentary also included President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's call that night when he connected to CNN Türk's live broadcast.
In his speech, Ambassador Demircan said that July 15 is an immortal epic of democracy written in golden letters in Turkey's recent history.
Demircan stated that on the night of July 15, 2016, the FETÖ terrorist organization targeted the Turkish state, democracy, national will, and constitutional order, bombed the Turkish Grand National Assembly, attacked state institutions, and opened fire on innocent civilians.
Emphasizing that the most decisive factor in the failure of the coup attempt was the Turkish people's defense of their freedom, independence, and state, Demircan stated that millions of citizens, regardless of their political views, lifestyle, or beliefs, heeded President Erdoğan's call and took to the streets to defend the national will.
Demircan added that what happened that night was not only the prevention of a coup attempt but also a historic turning point for the protection of democracy, the rule of law, and the people's will.
