Turkey’s 51st Commando Brigade has become central to security discussions along the Aegean coast with a new military formation becoming operational in Söke, a district of Aydın. Söke’s location opposite the island of Samos has made the establishment of the brigade command in the area significant in terms of military activity and security dynamics between Turkey and Greece.

The formation in Söke became visible during August, when Brig. Gen. Yaşar Karaoğlu also took up his post as commander of the 51st Commando Brigade. Karaoğlu visited Söke District Governor Ali Akça on August 28, 2026, while personnel from the 51st Commando Brigade took part in the August 30 ceremonies. These developments indicate that the formation may have been part of an arrangement that began earlier, rather than a sudden deployment on September 16, 2026.
The background of the formation in Söke
There is conflicting information about the 51st Commando Brigade’s previous location. Some reports have suggested that the unit was moved to Söke from Hozat district in Tunceli, while Karaoğlu’s previous post was identified as commander of the 51st Commando Brigade in Bozüyük district of Bilecik. For this reason, the assessment that the brigade’s entire force was moved from Hozat to Söke cannot be treated as confirmed.
A record dated March 18, 2026, attributed to the Hozat District Governor’s Office, listed Karaoğlu as commander of the 51st Commando Brigade in Hozat. His arrival in Söke after the August appointment decisions and the appearance of brigade personnel at official ceremonies in the district center were among the developments indicating that the new command became operational during this period.

Personnel strength and mission remain unclear
Some reports have put the number of personnel serving in Söke at approximately 2,000 or 2,004. However, the figures have not been confirmed by the Ministry of National Defense, so no definitive number can be given for the unit’s strength.
Assessments that the deployment was a direct response to Greece’s military activities on the island of Kastellorizo or to Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’s visits to the island have also not been supported by an official statement. Turkish and Greek media have discussed the military formations along the Söke, Foça and İzmir corridor within the framework of security dynamics in the Aegean, but these interpretations remain regional security assessments rather than stated reasons for an official decision.
Söke’s proximity to the island of Samos has been the main geographical factor behind bringing developments involving the 51st Commando Brigade into discussions about military deployments and operational mobility in the Aegean. However, the Ministry of National Defense, the General Staff or the Presidency has not issued a direct and current announcement stating that the brigade was moved from Tunceli to Söke, that it was responding to a specific Greek action or that it had been assigned a special operational mission in the area.
